Tonal Profile

A kick-drum cardioid with a shock-mounted capsule and a hum-bucking coil, deliberately deaf in the midrange. Sennheiser publishes two sensitivities for it - 0.6 mV/Pa at 60 Hz and 0.2 mV/Pa at 1 kHz - which is the response curve stated as numbers: a 9.5 dB difference between where the drum lives and where the catalogue measures.

Gain Staging Advice

-74 dBV/Pa at 1 kHz is the catalogue-comparable figure and it makes the e 902 look like it needs 70 dB of gain. It does not: on a kick the energy is at 60 Hz, where the same microphone is 9.5 dB louder, and the source is 130 dB SPL. Do not size the preamp from the 1 kHz number, and do not compare it with a vocal dynamic measured at 1 kHz - they are not describing the same job.

Was im Datenblatt tatsächlich steht

Herstellerdokumente widersprechen sich
«Frequency response 20 - 18,000 Hz»

The specification table on page one says 20 - 18,000 Hz. The Architect's Specification paragraph printed beside it, on the same page of the same PDF, says 'The frequency response shall be 40 Hz - 16,000 Hz'. The two ends differ by an octave at the bottom and two kilohertz at the top, on a microphone bought specifically for its low-frequency behaviour. The paragraph and the table agree on every other quantity, sensitivity included.
