Tonal Profile
The supercardioid of the MKH 40/50 pair: an RF condenser without an interference tube, so it keeps a usable off-axis response where a shotgun colours everything at the sides. Interiors, booms in small rooms, and the classic MS partner for the MKH 30.
Gain Staging Advice
12 dB(A) at 25 mV/Pa is the reason this microphone survives at a distance: the floor is low enough that the preamp, not the capsule, becomes the limit. Nominal impedance is 150 ohms - six times the MKH 8040's 25 - so cable length is less of a worry.

«Equivalent noise level (db) 12 (18) dB»
The product page prints the noise figure without naming a weighting, and does not print the sensitivity at all. Sennheiser's own quick guide for the same model, linked from that page, prints «Equivalent noise level A-weighted 12 (18) dB(A)» and «Sensitivity (free field, no load, 1 kHz) 25 (8) mV/Pa ±1 dB». The bracketed second value is the state with the -10 dB pad engaged; the page says neither of these things.
