Headroom Notes

Yamaha publishes four different power numbers for this receiver. Recorded here is the strict one: 100 W per channel into 8 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.06 % THD, two channels driven. The same manual also lists 125 W into 8 ohms and 150 W into 4 ohms with one channel driven at 1 kHz / 0.9 % THD, and a 'maximum effective' 150 W into 8 ohms / 160 W into 6 ohms at 10 % THD. The 160 W and the 100 W describe the same amplifier 60 % apart, purely by choosing the measurement.

Thermal Behavior

Yamaha's requirement is split by channel: front speakers at least 4 ohms, every other channel at least 6 ohms. The single number in this catalogue is the front-channel figure, which is what a stereo pair sees; a 4 ohm surround or centre speaker is outside Yamaha's own specification. The receiver also has a 6 ohm MIN / 8 ohm setting in Advanced Setup and ships set for 8 ohms.
