Expert Description
En: A passive transformer DI whose manual publishes both halves of the same fact: a level change of -20 dB from input to output and an impedance ratio of 110:1. The two agree — an impedance ratio of 110:1 is a turns ratio of about 10.5:1, which is 20.4 dB of loss. It also carries a 30 dB INST/AMP pad for speaker-level use and a 7.5 kHz low-pass filter.

Gain Staging Advice

Twenty decibels of loss is not a defect, it is the job: the box turns an instrument-level, high-impedance signal into a microphone-level, low-impedance one. Plan for the preamp to make those 20 dB back, and remember the INST/AMP switch removes another 30 dB on top.

Production Warning

Behringer publish the level change for this passive box but not for their active DIs; and the low-pass filter at 7.5 kHz is switchable, so a DI that sounds dull on a bright keyboard is usually a switch, not the transformer.
