Gain Staging Advice
Thirty-six decibels ahead of a preamp that already has sixty is a lot of gain to hand a noisy room. On an SM7B in a treated booth it is right; on a dynamic in a live room the +12 dB position is usually the correct one.
Production Warning
Like every Cloudlifter it takes phantom power and does not pass it on, so nothing behind it may be a condenser. The transformer adds the second catch: the +12 dB position is not just "less gain", it is a different amount of transformer drive and therefore a different sound.
