Headroom Notes

The two maxima on this sheet differ by exactly 6.0 dB, and the larger one is labelled «calc.» — it is the free-space measurement with the textbook half-space gain added, not a second measurement. Six decibels is what a boundary behind the monitor would return if the monitor were flush against it and the wall were rigid and infinite. We carry the measured full-space figure.

What the datasheet actually says

Quoted verbatim from the manufacturer’s own page, with the date we checked it. We state what is printed, not what anyone intended by it.

Measurement conditions
«Max. SPL calc. in half space at 3% THD at 1m (averaged between 100 Hz and 6 kHz): 118.7 dB SPL»

Neumann prints two maximum-SPL rows that differ by exactly 6.0 dB, and the higher of the two carries the word «calc.» — it is arithmetic applied to the measured free-space result, not an independent measurement. The 6 dB is the theoretical gain of a rigid infinite boundary directly behind the source. A monitor on a stand in a treated room does not get all of it, and a monitor flush-mounted into a wall gets more of it than a monitor 30 cm in front of one. The figure therefore describes the intended installation, not the loudspeaker.
