Expert Description
En: A passive AV direct box built on an Eclipse ET-DB2 transformer with a stated 12:1 ratio, which is 21.6 dB of loss. Inputs cover 1/4", RCA, 3.5 mm and a +4 dB balanced XLR line input; there is a -15 dB pad, a mono sum and a ground lift, response is 20 Hz to 18.5 kHz within 0.2 dB and maximum input is +18 dB at 20 Hz. · Uk: Пасивний директ-бокс для AV на трансформаторі Eclipse ET-DB2 із заявленим коефіцієнтом 12:1, тобто 21,6 дБ втрат. Входи — 1/4", RCA, 3,5 мм і симетричний лінійний XLR на +4 дБ; є атенюатор -15 дБ, сумування в моно й розрив землі, смуга 20 Гц — 18,5 кГц у межах 0,2 дБ, максимальний вхід +18 дБ на 20 Гц.·

Gain Staging Advice

The 21.6 dB is not published as a loss anywhere; it follows from the transformer ratio Radial do publish, 12:1, as 20·log(1/12). Add the -15 dB pad and a laptop output can arrive at the preamp nearly 37 dB down, which is where the hiss complaints about AV boxes come from.

What the datasheet actually says

Quoted verbatim from the manufacturer’s own page, with the date we checked it. We state what is printed, not what anyone intended by it.

The maker’s own documents disagree
««Output Impedance: 150 Ohms, balanced» (сторінка Specifications) проти «XLR OUTPUT balanced 600Ω mic-level output» (Smart Sheet, спільний PDF ProAV1/ProAV2)»

Radial's specification page gives the output impedance of the ProAV1 as 150 Ω; the Smart Sheet PDF linked from the same product page labels the same XLR output as a balanced 600 Ω mic-level output. The two documents differ by a factor of four on the figure that decides how the box behaves into a long cable or a bridging input. Separately, the Output Connectors row of that same specification page is left empty for both the ProAV1 and the ProAV2.
