Expert Audio Engineering Commentary

Tonal Profile

The consumer open-back that most people meet before they meet the HD 600: 50 Ω, velour pads, a warm lower midrange and a treble that never bites. Sennheiser states the reference in full — «106dB SPL (1kHz/1Vrms)» — which is why nothing here needs interpreting.

Amplification Warning

106 dB from one volt at 50 Ω: a phone dongle reaches deafening levels, so «needs an amplifier» is a myth for this model. What an amplifier does buy is a low output impedance — the HD 599 has a resonance peak, and a 100 Ω motherboard jack audibly tilts the bass.
