Gain Staging Advice
56 dB with the ceiling at +9 dBu is a wide window: enough gain for a dynamic broadcast microphone at speaking distance and enough headroom that a hot condenser on a snare will not clip the front end.
Amplification Warning
Tascam is one of the few makers in this price class that publishes the headphone jack's output impedance, and the number is 51.5 Ω. Against a 16-32 Ω in-ear monitor that is a voltage divider losing more than half the signal and, worse, tracking the headphone's own impedance curve, so the tonal balance shifts. The working range Tascam gives, 16-600 Ω, describes what the jack tolerates, not what it drives neutrally.
