Gain Staging Advice
The point is not to make things quieter but to move the preamp into a louder part of its gain range: attenuate at the capsule, then open the preamp up. On a preamp whose character only appears above half travel that is the only way to get there with a loud source.
Production Warning
The attenuation is continuous, so the -18 dB in this record is the far end of the knob, not a fixed value. Set it by ear against the preamp's meter; there is no detent and no scale.
