Expert Audio Engineering Commentary

Tonal Profile

A DC-bias (externally polarised) three-pattern large diaphragm - not an electret, unlike most of the 40 series. Figure-8 on an AT4050 is genuinely usable, which is why it turns up as the side mic in mid-side rigs.

Gain Staging Advice

-36 dBV/Pa is 4 dB quieter on output than an AT4033a for the same 17 dB-A floor, so the AT4050 is the harder of the two to feed from a weak preamp.

What the datasheet actually says

Quoted verbatim from the manufacturer’s own page, with the date we checked it. We state what is printed, not what anyone intended by it.

Measurement conditions
«感度 -36dB(15.8mV)(0dB=1V/Pa,1kHz)»

One sensitivity figure covers all three switchable patterns (omni, cardioid, figure-8) and the sheet does not say which was measured. Audio-Technica does the same on the AT2050. The reference is at least named here - 0 dB = 1 V/Pa - which is more than many of its competitors manage.

Unit not stated
«ノイズ 17dB SPL»

The noise row carries no weighting, while the same table's signal-to-noise row does: «77dB (1kHz at 1Pa, A特性)». 94 dB SPL minus 77 dB is exactly 17 dB, so the figure is A-weighted - but only the neighbouring row says so. On the AT4033a sheet, built from the same template, the noise row itself reads «17dB SPL(A特性)».
