DT 770 Pro on a MOTU M2: 32, 80 or 250 Ω — which version should you buy?
All three versions ask for exactly the same 25.12 mW. The 32 Ω needs 0.90 V and keeps 11.2 dB spare, the 80 Ω needs 1.42 V and keeps 7.3 dB, the 250 Ω needs 2.51 V and keeps 2.3 dB. Same driver, three different answers.

beyerdynamic rates all three at 96 dB/mW. Converted with S_V = S_mW + 10·lg(1000/Z) that becomes 110.9, 107.0 and 102.0 dB/V — an 8.9 dB spread from one nominal number. A 110 dB peak therefore needs V = 10^((110 − S_V)/20), that is 0.90 V, 1.42 V and 2.51 V. MOTU publishes +12.5 dBu for the M2 headphone output, i.e. 3.27 V, which lands at 121.2, 117.3 and 112.3 dB SPL.
The part that surprises people: the power is identical. All three need 25.12 mW, because 96 dB/mW is a per-milliwatt figure and the milliwatt does not care about impedance. What changes is how that power is split: 0.90 V at 28.02 mA, 1.42 V at 17.72 mA, 2.51 V at 10.02 mA. A headphone output runs out of volts long before it runs out of milliamps, so the 250 Ω version is the difficult one — not because it asks for more, but because it asks in the currency the source is short of.
The pearl: the missing unit. beyerdynamic's DT 770 sheet prints "Nominal SPL 96 dB" with no unit at all. The DT 700/900 PRO X sheets print "100 dB SPL (1 mW / 500 Hz)" — that is the only place in beyerdynamic's own documents that tells you how to read the bare 96. It matters here more than anywhere: read as dB/V, all three versions would look identical and the entire 8.9 dB spread that decides this purchase would vanish.
What we cannot check. MOTU does not publish the output impedance of the M2 headphone jack. The 1/8 rule wants a source below 4 Ω for the 32 Ω version, 10 Ω for the 80 Ω and 31 Ω for the 250 Ω — and with no published figure we cannot say whether the M2 clears any of them. The output impedance forms a divider with the headphone, and a divider only ever subtracts, so every level above is the optimistic end of the range. The low-impedance version is the one most exposed to that: at 32 Ω a mediocre output stage costs both level and bass shape.
