Does the Corsair HS65 Surround need an amp? The spec sheet says 32k Ohms

Two numbers on one Corsair spec table are ambiguous, and between the literal reading and the real one lies 14.6 dB — the difference between «no source will drive this» and «any phone dongle will».
The page for the HS65 Surround prints, word for word: «Impedance: 32k Ohms @ 1 kHz» and «Headphone Sensitivity: 114dB (+/-3dB)». Neither line can be used as printed. The first says the headset presents 32 000 Ω; the second gives a sound pressure level without saying per what.
Read as printed. 32 000 Ω with 114 dB taken per milliwatt converts to S_V = 114 + 10·lg(1000/32000) = 98.95 dB/V. A 110 dB peak — 85 dB of listening plus 25 dB of crest factor — then needs 3.569 V. The FiiO KA13 delivers 1.22 V into a near-open load, so the chain reaches 100.7 dB SPL: 9.3 dB short, verdict TOO QUIET. That is the answer a catalogue that copies numbers would give about a headset you can drive from a laptop jack.
Read the way the numbers mean. 32 Ω with 114 dB per volt needs 0.631 V, 19.72 mA and 12.44 mW. The KA13's 1.22 V across its 1.7 Ω output and the 32 Ω load leaves 1.158 V at the headset — 115.3 dB SPL, +5.3 dB of headroom, verdict comfortable. Damping ratio 18.8, well past the 1/8 rule.
How to tell which is right. Three things, none of them opinion. Corsair itself prints a plain «32 Ohms» on its VIRTUOSO pages. The same «32k Ohms @ 1 kHz» line appears on the HS55 Stereo and HS55 Surround V2 pages, so it is a template, not a typo on one product. And 114 dB/mW would put a 50 mm driver 14 dB above every labelled competitor of the same size, while 114 dB/V works out to 99 dB/mW — exactly the peer cluster.
The pearl: the two errors do not add up the way you would expect. Because the stored sensitivity is per volt, impedance drops out of the voltage equation entirely — reading 32 kΩ instead of 32 Ω changes the required voltage not at all and the delivered level by 0.4 dB, the loss in the KA13's own 1.7 Ω output. What it does change is the current and the power: 19.72 mA and 12.44 mW become 0.02 mA and 0.01 mW. Only when both errors are made together does the verdict flip. One number is wrong by a factor of a thousand and costs 0.4 dB; the other is wrong by a missing letter and costs 15.
