Grado SR80 on a DragonFly Cobalt: the only spec sheet that writes the scale into the line

"SPL 1mW: 98". Four characters of unit, and they are worth 14.2 dB.

Grado is the only maker in this catalogue who writes the scale into the specification line itself. Everyone else prints a bare number and expects you to know. With the unit attached, the SR80's 98 dB/mW at 38 Ω converts to 98 + 10·lg(1000/38) = 112.20 dB/V, so a 110 dB peak needs 0.776 V, 20.42 mA and 15.85 mW. AudioQuest describes the DragonFly Cobalt as having a "robust 2.1-volt output", which puts the SR80 at 118.6 dB SPL — 8.6 dB of headroom, comfortable.

The pearl: price the ambiguity. Take the same 98 and read it as dB/V, the way a bare number invites. The requirement jumps from 0.776 V to 3.981 V, and the identical chain now reads 104.4 dB — 5.6 dB short, verdict TOO_QUIET. Nothing physical changed; one unit did. That gap is why "open Grados need an amp" and "Grados run off anything" are both common advice: they are the same headphone read on two different scales. The 14.2 dB between 98 dB/mW and 98 dB/V at 38 Ω is larger than the difference between most headphones in a shortlist.

What is thin on the source side. AudioQuest publishes no specification table for the Cobalt at all — the 2.1 V figure is a sentence on a product page, and there is no output impedance anywhere in it. The 1/8 rule wants below 4.75 Ω for a 38 Ω load; we cannot say whether the Cobalt clears it, so the 118.6 dB above is computed with no divider loss and is the optimistic end. An open-back dynamic headphone is exactly the case where a high output impedance would be audible as a bass shift, so this is a real gap, not a formality.

One practical trap. The Cobalt is a USB-A stick and the XPS 13 9350 has only USB-C ports, so this chain does not physically exist without an adapter. Note also a documentation wrinkle on the headphone side: Grado's own store page lists this model as the SR80 with a 20 Hz–20 kHz response, which does not match the SR80x datasheet. The numbers here are the ones on the page we cite; if your box says SR80x, check its own sheet before reusing them.
