Samson Q2U straight into an iPad Air M3: what you give up compared with the Q9U, and it is not output level

Short answer: it works, and the iPad has power to spare. But read the converter line before you decide this is the cheap version of a Q9U.

In USB mode the Q2U bypasses the entire preamp question. There is no interface gain knob in this chain — the microphone's own converter is the input, and its gain control is on the microphone. Level staging happens inside Samson's box, not in yours.

On the power side there is nothing to worry about: the iPad Air 11-inch M3 supplies 7.5 W and Samson rates a hybrid of this class at 170 mA, well under a watt. Plug it in with a USB-C cable and it enumerates.

The cheaper microphone is 3 dB louder on XLR. If "upgrade" means "needs less gain", the upgrade goes the wrong way: on an SSL 2 MkII the Q2U asks for 52 dB where the Q9U asks for 55. What the extra money buys is a 24-bit converter, an extra 5 kHz of published bandwidth, and a broadcast-arm body.

The gem. In USB mode the sensitivity number on the box stops meaning what you think it means, and 16-bit is the specification that should worry you instead — but not for the reason usually given. Sixteen bits is plenty of dynamic range for a spoken voice; the problem is that it leaves no room for a mistake. A 24-bit path lets you record 20 dB low, fix it afterwards, and lose nothing audible. A 16-bit path recorded 20 dB low has thrown away more than three bits of your take permanently, before you ever open the file. On a microphone whose gain knob is on the mic and whose meter is in someone else's app, that is exactly the mistake people make.

Practical. Set the level on the microphone, watch the meter in your recording app, and aim for peaks around −12 dBFS rather than the −18 this calculator targets for analogue chains — with 16 bits you want to be closer to the top, not further from it. And if you also own an interface, remember the Q2U's XLR side is an ordinary −54 dBV dynamic that any preamp in this catalogue above 55 dB will drive without help.
