Shure SM57 through a Golden Age Pre-73 MkIV: which input on the MiniFuse 2, and what to do with the second gain knob

An 80 dB outboard preamp in front of a 56 dB interface is not 136 dB of gain — it is one preamp doing the work and one staying out of the way. The connection goes to the line input, and the SM57 needs 54 dB of the 80.

Short answer: line input, not microphone input. The Pre-73 does all the amplifying, and the MiniFuse's own preamp should be out of the circuit entirely.

This is the one chain in this category where the interface's gain figure stops mattering. At 85 dB SPL the SM57's −56 dBV/Pa sensitivity puts about −62.8 dBu on the cable; the chain needs 54 dB to reach −18 dBFS against the MiniFuse 2's +9 dBu clip point. The Pre-73 MkIV offers 80 dB. It covers the requirement with 26 dB to spare and hands the MiniFuse a signal that is already at line level.

What arrives at the interface is therefore not a microphone signal at all, and putting it into a microphone input means amplifying an already-amplified signal — the fastest way to overload the front end of a converter and to blame the wrong box for the distortion. Use the line input, or the combo jack's TRS side.

Two gain knobs, one job. The rule is that gain is set where the signal is quietest, because that is the only place where adding it does not also add somebody else's noise. Every decibel you take from the Pre-73 arrives with the transformer and the discrete circuitry that you paid for. Every decibel you take from the MiniFuse afterwards arrives with the Pre-73's output noise already baked in. Set the Pre-73 to land at a healthy line level, leave the interface at unity, and the second knob has nothing left to do.

Bare, for comparison. Without the Pre-73 the SM57 asks 54 dB and the MiniFuse 2 has 56. It fits — with two decibels of margin, at the top of the knob where a budget preamp is at its noisiest. That is the honest reason to own an outboard preamp on an SM57: not because the interface cannot reach the level, but because it reaches it from the wrong end of its own range.

The gem. Look at what 80 dB actually means on this microphone: you are using two thirds of the available travel and the rest exists for ribbons and for distant, quiet sources. Nobody buys a Pre-73 for the last 26 dB. They buy the transformer, and it is worth being honest about that, because it turns the purchase from a specification question into a taste question — and taste questions cannot be settled by a calculator, including this one. What the calculator can tell you is that on a modern 56-to-69 dB interface, the level argument for an outboard preamp has quietly disappeared.
