Shure SM7B on a Universal Audio Volt 276: is 55 dB of gain enough?
The Volt stops at +55 dB. Speech at a hand's distance asks this microphone for 60. Five decibels short — and the built-in 1176-style compressor is not the thing that closes the gap.

Short answer: no — about five decibels short, and nothing after the preamp can give them back.
At a normal speaking level (85 dB SPL, a hand's width from the grille) the SM7B's −59 dBV/Pa sensitivity puts roughly −65.8 dBu on the cable. To land at −18 dBFS on a converter that clips at +12.5 dBu, the preamp has to supply 60 dB. The Volt 276 publishes 55 dB. The knob will be against its stop and the take will still sit around 5 dB low.
That is survivable. Raise it in the DAW afterwards and the recording is usable in a quiet room — but the preamp's own hiss comes up by the same 5 dB. If your room or your voice is quiet, put a +25 dB inline booster in front: the requirement drops to 35 dB, which the Volt delivers from the calm middle of its range instead of its noisy end.
Two things that rarely get said. First, gain is only real where it is added. A compressor, its makeup control, and DAW normalisation all sit downstream of the preamp and lift its noise by exactly as much as they lift your voice — the missing 5 dB can be moved, never recovered. Second, the Volt asks for 5 W over USB, and a Windows USB-A port in this database supplies 4.5 W. On a desktop use a rear port wired to the motherboard, never a hub; on Windows also install UA's own ASIO driver, or you will be blaming the preamp for latency it did not cause.
