The monitors are not the difficult part. The HS7 carries its own bi-amplified 95 W and accepts a balanced line signal on XLR or 6.35 mm TRS. Nothing here goes to speaker terminals, ever — there is a power amplifier at both ends of that cable, and connecting them is a topology error, not a matter of sound quality.

The fragile link is bus power. 7.5 W against 5.0 W leaves 2.5 W of margin, and that margin disappears the moment a hub, a drive or a charging cable shares the port. The failure is not silence, which would at least be honest — it is clicks and dropouts under load, which people spend weeks blaming on drivers and buffer sizes.

If it drops out: power the Volt from its own 5 V supply and let the iPad port carry data only, or use a powered USB-C hub. A Windows USB-A port at 4.5 W needs that supply from the start: it is 0.5 W short before anything else is plugged in. A MacBook USB-C port at 15 W has margin to spare and is not part of this problem.
