DT 770 Pro 80 Ω on an iFi hip-dac 3: the folk advice is right, and here is why

"Get the 80 Ω, it works everywhere" is the most repeated sentence about this headphone. On this device it happens to be true, and the reason is arithmetic.
iFi publishes 3.2 V at 600 Ω for the hip-dac 3's single-ended output. The DT 770 Pro 80 Ω is 96 dB/mW at 80 Ω, which is 106.97 dB/V, so a 110 dB peak needs 1.418 V and the chain reaches 117.1 dB SPL: +7.1 dB. The 32 Ω version on the same device gives +11.1 dB and the 250 Ω +2.1 dB. All three play; only the 80 Ω sits in the middle, where there is real margin without the low impedance that makes an unknown output stage risky.
The pearl: a maximum output figure is always attached to a load, and iFi publishes two of them. The same page gives 280 mW into 32 Ω, which works out to √(0.28 × 32) = 2.99 V. So the honest range for an 80 Ω load is between 2.99 V and 3.2 V, depending on whether the amplifier is voltage-limited or current-limited at that point — iFi does not say. Taking the conservative 2.99 V gives 116.5 dB, +6.5 dB. The verdict does not change, which is what a robust result looks like: state both numbers, show that the conclusion survives the worse one.
What we cannot check. Our record for the hip-dac 3 carries no output impedance — iFi publishes power and voltage on that page, but not the figure the 1/8 rule needs. For an 80 Ω headphone the rule wants below 10 Ω. That is a comparatively relaxed requirement, and the 80 Ω version is far less exposed to a mediocre output stage than the 32 Ω one would be, but relaxed is not the same as checked, and both levels above are computed with no divider loss.
On the iPad side there is nothing to worry about and one thing to plan. The hip-dac 3 runs on its own battery, so it draws nothing from the iPad Air's 7.5 W port — the port carries data. What that means practically is two cables in your bag: a USB-C data lead to the iPad and a separate charging lead for the hip-dac. The DT 770's 3.5 mm plug goes straight into the single-ended jack; the 4.4 mm balanced port would need a different cable, and the DT 770 does not have a detachable one.
