ART Tube MP Studio V3 with an Elgato Wave DX: ART's own sheet says 50–60 dB, the shops say 70 or 80

ART publishes `Maximum Gain: 50 dB – 60 dB`. Listings advertise 70 dB and even 80 dB “XLR to XLR”. ART's own maximum output level of +14 dBu settles the argument: at speaking level, more than about 73 dB of gain cannot come out of the box.

Short answer: this chain needs 50 dB, ART's published maximum starts at 50 dB, and that is close enough to matter.

The numbers. At 85 dB SPL the Wave DX's −52 dBV/Pa sensitivity puts −58.8 dBu on the cable. The MiniFuse 2 clips at +9 dBu, so a −18 dBFS take needs 50 dB of gain in total. Run through the Tube MP into the interface's line input, the ART is doing all of it and the MiniFuse's own 56 dB preamp stays out of the way.

Why the advertised number is not a detail. ART's specification page prints Maximum Gain: 50 dB - 60 dB. If the true figure is the bottom of that range, this chain has zero margin at a quiet voice: 50 dB needed, 50 dB available. If you believed a listing that says 70 dB, you would buy the box expecting 20 dB of slack that may not exist, and you would only discover the difference on a quiet source — a soft-spoken guest, a hand percussion overdub, a ribbon.

ART's other number settles it. The same page prints Maximum Output Level: +14 dBu XLR. Feeding −58.8 dBu in, the arithmetic is unforgiving: 60 dB of gain gives +1.2 dBu out, 70 dB gives +11.2 dBu, and 80 dB would demand +21.2 dBu — 7 dB beyond what ART says the output can produce. At normal speaking level the box physically cannot deliver more than about 73 dB without clipping its own output stage. The 80 dB claim is not merely unsupported; it is refuted by the manufacturer's own output spec.

The gem. A gain figure quoted “XLR to XLR” and a gain figure quoted into a line input are not the same measurement, and neither is a gain figure taken with the instrument jack (ART's own input impedance splits 2 kΩ XLR against 840 kΩ on the jack). The way to tell whether a preamp really has the gain you are buying is not the gain line at all — it is the maximum output line. Gain you cannot get out of the box is not gain.

What to do: Wave DX → XLR → Tube MP Studio V3 → 1/4" TRS → MiniFuse 2 line input, MiniFuse preamp at minimum. Expect to run the ART near the top of its range on a quiet voice, and treat 50 dB, not 70, as the number you paid for.
