Audio-Technica AT2035 on an AudioBox GO and an iPad: 11–52 V phantom, and a datasheet that names the wrong microphone

The AT2035 runs on anything from 11 to 52 V; the AT2020 wants 48 V. Audio-Technica's own AT2035 sheet attributes the wide range to the AT2020, and its AT2020 sheet contradicts it. The chain itself needs 32 dB of the AudioBox GO's 50.

Short answer: this chain works with 18 dB of preamp left over, and the AT2035 is one of the few condensers that does not care whether your phantom supply actually reaches 48 V.

The numbers. At a normal speaking level of 85 dB SPL, the AT2035's −33 dBV/Pa sensitivity puts −39.8 dBu on the cable. The AudioBox GO clips at +10 dBu, so landing a take at −18 dBFS means the preamp must supply 32 dB of the 50 dB it has. The interface asks 2.5 W of the iPad's 7.5 W USB-C port, so no powered hub is involved.

Why the voltage range matters here. Audio-Technica prints, in the AT2035 specification table, Phantom power requirements — 11-52V DC, 3.8 mA typical. The AT2020's table says 48V DC, 2 mA typical. A bus-powered interface builds its phantom rail from 5 V USB, and cheap ones land in the low 40s or below. The AT2035 is specified to keep working there. The AT2020 is not.

Two documents from one manufacturer, one microphone, two answers. In the AT2035 datasheet, under the heading Operation and Maintenance, the sentence reads: “The AT2020 requires 11V to 52V phantom power for operation.” Three paragraphs earlier, the same page says correctly: “The microphone requires 11V to 52V phantom power for operation.” Meanwhile the AT2020's own datasheet says: “The AT2020 requires 48V phantom power for operation,” and its table agrees. So Audio-Technica's AT2035 sheet makes a claim about the AT2020 that Audio-Technica's AT2020 sheet refutes. The AT2035 number is the one supported by two places in its own document, and that is the number used here.

The gem. Everybody reads the voltage line; almost nobody reads the current line beside it. The wide-range AT2035 draws 3.8 mA, while the 48 V-only AT2020 draws 2.0 mA — nearly double. A weak phantom rail collapses under current draw, not under a voltage request, so the microphone that tolerates a sagging supply is also the one that loads it hardest. Its tolerance is what saves it, not thrift. If you are running two condensers off one bus-powered interface, that pair of numbers predicts which combination browns out first.

What to do: one XLR cable, +48 V on, gain around 32 dB. If the interface's phantom is weak enough that you can hear it, the AT2035 will tell you by sounding thin rather than by going silent — that is the failure mode of a mic specified down to 11 V.
