Cloudlifter CL-Zi with a Shure Beta 58A: the three-position switch is attenuation, not three levels of gain

Shops describe the CL-Zi's +25 / +12 / +8 dB switch as three gain settings. Cloud calls it an output attenuation switch — the boost is fixed and the switch only takes level away, which changes what the box can and cannot fix.

Short answer: the chain works at all three switch positions, and none of the three is a gain setting.

The numbers. At 85 dB SPL the Beta 58A's −51 dBV/Pa sensitivity puts −57.8 dBu on the cable. The Volt 176 clips at +9 dBu, so a −18 dBFS take needs 49 dB of total gain. With the CL-Zi at +25 dB the Volt 176's own preamp supplies 24 dB of its 55 dB; at the +12 setting it supplies 37 dB; at +8 it supplies 41 dB. All three fit.

What Cloud publishes. The specification reads Output attenuation switch +25dB / +12dB / +8dB settings, alongside Up to +25dB of ultra-clean gain. Together they say one thing: the amplifier is fixed at +25 dB and the switch throws 13 or 17 dB of it away after amplification. Calling these “three gain levels” inverts the design, and the inversion has a consequence: the +8 position does not give you a gentler amplifier with more internal headroom. The signal still passes the same +25 dB stage before anything is removed. If a loud source were about to strain the CL-Zi's output, +8 would not rescue it — it would hand you the same strained signal 17 dB quieter.

Phantom power, stated plainly for once. Cloud writes that the CL-Zi “doesn't pass phantom power, effectively safeguarding all passive ribbon microphones.” That sentence is exactly what three of its competitors lack. A condenser behind a CL-Zi will not work at all, and Cloud says so in print.

The gem. The attenuator exists because +25 dB in front of a modern 55–70 dB preamp is often too much, and the usual reflex — turning the interface preamp down to the bottom of its travel — lands you where many preamp designs are least linear. Here +25 dB leaves the Volt 176 at 24 dB while +8 dB leaves it at 41 dB, in the comfortable middle of its range. The setting sold as “less gain” is arguably the better-sounding one.

What to do: Beta 58A → CL-Zi → Volt 176 mic input, +48 V on for the booster. Start at +8 with the interface at 41 dB; go to +25 only when you want the interface preamp out of the picture.
