Corsair HS55 Stereo impedance: 32 or 32,000 ohms? The same line is on three product pages

«Impedance: 32k Ohms @ 1 kHz» appears verbatim on the HS55 Stereo, the HS55 Surround V2 and the HS65 Surround. On a Truthear SHIO the printed reading gives −5.0 dB, the real one +10.0 dB. Three headsets, one measurement, a 15 dB question.

The same sentence — «Impedance: 32k Ohms @ 1 kHz» — is printed on three different Corsair product pages. That makes it a template, not a typo, and it is the reason the answer to «will this run off my PC» has two versions 15 dB apart.

The HS55 Stereo costs about $50, the HS55 Surround V2 about $70, the HS65 Surround about $60. All three publish the identical electrical pair: 32k Ohms at 1 kHz and «Headphone Sensitivity: 114dB (+/-3dB)». Nothing in those two lines distinguishes the cheapest from the dearest.

The printed reading. Taking 32 000 Ω and treating 114 dB as per milliwatt — the convention most headphone tables use when they bother to name one — gives S_V = 98.95 dB/V. A 110 dB peak needs 3.569 V. The Truthear SHIO puts out 2 V on high gain, so the chain reaches 105.0 dB SPL: −5.0 dB, verdict too quiet.

The real reading. 32 Ω and 114 dB per volt need 0.631 V, 19.72 mA and 12.44 mW. The SHIO's 2 V gives 120.0 dB SPL — +10.0 dB of headroom. Corsair does not publish the SHIO-side risk either way: Truthear names no output impedance, so the damping ratio is unknown and every level above is an upper bound.

How to tell. A 50 mm dynamic voice coil at 32 000 Ω would need wire finer than any driver uses and would take microamps to move; the figure has no physical counterpart. Corsair's own VIRTUOSO pages print «32 Ohms» without the k. And the sensitivity settles the same way: 114 dB/V is 99 dB/mW at 32 Ω, ordinary for this size, while 114 dB/mW would be a record.

The pearl: the kilohm costs nothing here and the missing unit costs everything. With sensitivity expressed per volt, the required voltage is 0.631 V whether the load is 32 Ω or 32 000 Ω — impedance only decides how much current flows behind that voltage. On the SHIO, which publishes no output impedance, both impedance readings land on exactly 120.0 dB SPL. The entire 15 dB gap comes from one absent letter after «114dB». And since all three HS models carry the same two lines, whatever you conclude for the $50 Stereo you must also conclude for the $70 Surround V2: the spec table cannot justify the price difference, because it is one measurement printed three times.
