The RE320 is bought as an SM7B alternative and inherits the SM7B's accessory list along with the reputation. At −52 dBV/Pa it is 7 dB louder than an SM7B and does not need the booster it is usually sold with.

Short answer: you do not need it for level. Whether you want it for noise is a different question, and our catalogue cannot close that one honestly.

The Electro-Voice RE320 is the loudest of the broadcast dynamics in this catalogue at −52 dBV/Pa. At 85 dB SPL that is about −58.8 dBu on the cable, and against the MOTU M4's +10 dBu clip point and a −18 dBFS target the chain needs 51 dB. The M4 publishes 60 dB — in its manual's appendix, incidentally, not on the product page. Nine decibels in hand, with no booster in the path at all.

Add the sE DM1 Dynamite's +28 dB and the picture shifts rather than improves:

The requirement was met in every row. What the booster changes is where on the preamp's curve you sit, not whether you get there.

Why that might still matter, and why we will not pretend to settle it. A preamp's self-noise rises as you open it up, so moving from 51 dB to 23 dB puts the M4 in a quieter operating region. Whether the result is a quieter recording depends on whether the Dynamite's own noise contribution is lower than what the M4 adds over those 28 dB. Our catalogue has an EIN figure for the M4 (−129 dBu) and no published noise figure for the DM1 Dynamite at all. So the comparison cannot be closed from published numbers, and any page that tells you confidently which way it goes is guessing on your behalf.

The gem. The RE320 arrived on desks as "the SM7B alternative", and the comparison is fair for tone, body and broadcast intent — but it is not fair for output. The SM7B sits at −59 dBV/Pa, the RE320 at −52: seven decibels apart, which is the difference between needing a booster on a 50 dB interface and not needing one. The accessory list travelled with the reputation, and nobody re-ran the arithmetic. If you bought the Dynamite because the internet said an RE320 is "another gain-hungry broadcast dynamic", the internet was describing a different microphone.

Practical. On a 60 dB interface, try it without the booster first and listen to the noise floor in a silent room with the fader up. If it is clean, the box in the middle is one more connector, one more power draw on the phantom rail, and one more thing to debug. If it is not, the Dynamite is a reasonable fix — just make the decision by listening, because the published data does not contain the answer.
