Focusrite ISA One with a RODE NT1-A: is the maximum gain 60 dB or 80 dB? Focusrite never says
The ISA One publishes `0dB to 60dB in 10dB steps` and, separately, `20 dB of variable gain`. Whether they add to 80 dB or the trim is a vernier inside the steps is never stated. A page about a preamp whose headline number is unknown.

Short answer: this chain needs 33 dB, which the ISA One has under any reading of its own specification — but the specification genuinely has two readings, and Focusrite publishes neither total.
The numbers. At 85 dB SPL the NT1-A's −32 dBV/Pa sensitivity puts −38.8 dBu on the cable. The iD14 MkII clips at +12 dBu, so a −18 dBFS take needs 33 dB. And 33 dB is precisely the awkward case for a stepped preamp: the 30 dB step lands the take at −20.8 dBFS, the 40 dB step at −10.8 dBFS. Neither is where you wanted to be; the trim is what closes the gap. The iD14 MkII's own 58 dB preamp takes no part in this: the ISA One feeds its line input, so the whole 33 dB comes from the ISA.
What Focusrite publishes, and what it does not. The specification says Gain Range (Mic) 0dB to 60dB in 10dB steps and, on its own line, 20 dB of variable gain. Nothing on the page adds them, and nothing on the page says they cannot be added. So the ISA One's maximum microphone gain is either 60 dB or 80 dB, and the manufacturer has not committed. For the instrument input Focusrite is precise — Gain Range (Instrument) 10dB to 40dB continuously variable — which makes the silence on the microphone side look like a choice rather than an oversight.
Why it is not a pedantic question. Between 60 and 80 dB lies the entire class of problems people buy an ISA One to solve: a ribbon on a quiet room, a soft voice at distance, a passive dynamic on a far-miked cabinet. If the answer is 60, the ISA One is not the box for those jobs and a different preamp is. If it is 80, it is. You cannot plan the purchase from the datasheet, only from a measurement.
The gem. When a stepped preamp is paired with a separate trim, the useful test costs one minute and settles it for your own unit: set the step to 40 dB, note the meter, then back the step to 30 dB and turn the trim to its maximum. If the level returns to what you saw at 40 dB, the trim adds and your maximum is 80 dB. If it stops about 10 dB short, the trim only fills the gaps between steps and your maximum is 60 dB. Write the answer on the case; you will not find it in the manual.
What to do: NT1-A → ISA One → line input of the iD14 MkII, iD14 preamp down. Set the step to 30 dB and trim upward to taste — that is the setting that works under either reading of the specification.
