Razer Barracuda X vs beyerdynamic at the same 96 dB: «by HATS» means it was measured on a different rig

Three headphones in this catalogue publish 96 dB. One says what it was measured on, one says nothing, and one covers three impedances with a single figure. Only the first is honest enough to be uncomparable.

Razer's page for the Barracuda X prints «Impedance: 32 Ω @ 1 kHz» and «Sensitivity: 96dBSPL/mW@1 kHz by HATS». HATS is a head-and-torso simulator: an artificial head with pinnae and ear canals. Most headphone datasheets use a flat-plate or an IEC 60318-1 coupler instead. The two rigs differ by several decibels, in a direction that depends on how the earcup seals.

As published. 96 dB/mW at 32 Ω converts to S_V = 96 + 10·lg(1000/32) = 110.95 dB/V. A 110 dB peak needs 0.897 V, 28.02 mA and 25.12 mW. The Qudelix 5K publishes 2 V on the 3.5 mm output, so the chain reaches 117.0 dB SPL, +7.0 dB, verdict comfortable. Qudelix does not publish an output impedance, so the damping ratio is unknown and 117.0 dB is an upper bound.

Read with the rig's own uncertainty. Take the same 96 dB as ±3 dB of coupler difference and the answer becomes 114.0 dB (+4.0) at the pessimistic end and 120.0 dB (+10.0) at the optimistic one. Read the unit wrong — 96 as dB per volt — and the peak would need 5.012 V, 156.62 mA and 784.96 mW; the Qudelix would land at 102.0 dB SPL, −8.0 dB, too quiet. The rig is worth ±3 dB. The unit is worth 15.

How to judge. Razer's figure is the manufacturer's own and it names its conditions, which is more than the alternatives offer. The right conclusion is not to discard it but to refuse the comparison: on the same Qudelix, beyerdynamic's MMX 300 PRO — 48 Ω, «Nominal sound pressure level: 96 dB» with no unit and no rig — computes to 115.2 dB SPL, +5.2 dB, while the DT 770 PRO 32, also 96 dB, lands on 117.0 dB, identical to the Barracuda. Those numbers look like a ranking. They are not one: they are three different laboratories.

The pearl: naming the rig is what makes the figure incomparable, and that is a point in Razer's favour. A sheet that says «96 dB» and nothing else invites you to place it in a table next to every other 96 dB. A sheet that says «by HATS» tells you the table is invalid. The 2022 Barracuda X carries the identical line — 32 Ω, 96 dB SPL/mW by HATS — while its driver description changes from «Razer TriForce 40 mm» to «Customized Dynamic 40 mm»: one measurement, two generations, and nothing in the numbers to tell them apart.
