Short answer: no. The MD 421-II needs 55 dB, the Audient iD4 mkII has 58, and the microphone that actually struggles here is a hundred-dollar podcast mic, not the four-hundred-dollar broadcast classic.

Every microphone below is moving-coil. Every one is on the same interface, at the same 85 dB SPL, aiming at the same −18 dBFS against the iD4 mkII's +12 dBu clip point. The only thing that changes is the published sensitivity.

The entire shelf fits, but look at the bottom rows: the PodMic and the Q9U land exactly on the interface's ceiling. No margin, no bad day allowed. And notice which microphones they are — the cheap ones bought precisely because they are "just a dynamic, it will be fine".

The gem. The whole spread from the loudest dynamic here to the quietest is six decibels. Source level enters the gain formula one for one, so moving your mouth from a hand's width to a fist's width — or simply speaking up — shifts the requirement by more than the entire catalogue of dynamic microphones does. Mic technique outranks mic choice by a factor of several, and no product page will tell you that because there is nothing to sell in it.

Where the myth came from. One microphone, the Shure SM7B at −59 dBV/Pa, is genuinely 4.5 dB quieter than the SM58 and 7 dB quieter than the RE320 — and it became famous at a time when a typical budget preamp offered 50 to 56 dB. That combination produced a real, reproducible failure, a real accessory market, and a rule of thumb that has now outlived both. The MD 421-II sits 5 dB above the SM7B and has never needed the accessory.

Practical note. With 3 dB of margin the MD 421-II is fine for speech but tight for a quiet source at distance — a room mic on a drum kit at three metres is a different calculation. Move the SPL slider on this page down to 75 dB and watch the requirement climb to 65 dB, past the interface entirely.
