Audient iD4 MkII with a Shure SM7B: two decibels short
The chain needs 60 dB and the interface publishes 58. Two decibels is not a booster's worth of shortfall — it is one notch of recording level, or a hand's width of distance, and this page shows exactly which cheaper move erases it.

Input Equipment Setup
PASS: Optimal Signal Chain
Requires minimum +60dB of clean pre-amp gain. Most budget entry interfaces max out at +50dB to +56dB and introduce hiss at max pot. An inline preamp booster (Cloudlifter CL-1 / FetHead) is strongly recommended.
The interface preamp provides sufficient headroom.

-25%Tonal & acoustic characteristics: Flat, wide-range frequency response for clean music and speech. Smooth, warm acoustic character with air-suspension shock isolation.
Technical advisory: With +69dB max gain, the Gen 4 Solo can drive demanding dynamics like the Shure SM7B natively without requiring an external inline booster.

Short by 2 dB at a normal speaking level — and the calculator deliberately does not recommend a booster for it.
The arithmetic. −59 dBV/Pa at 85 dB SPL gives −65.78 dBu. The iD4 MkII clips at 12 dBu, so −18 dBFS asks for 12 − 18 + 65.78 = 60 dB. Audient publishes 58 dB of gain: a deficit of 2 dB, which the site reports as a shortfall while leaving the chain marked as workable.
Why no booster is recommended. An inline preamp is a 25–27 dB instrument. Fitting one here to cover 2 dB means running the interface preamp 23 dB lower than designed, at the bottom of its travel, and paying between $45 and $129 for the privilege. The threshold in the calculator is deliberate: a deficit of 2 dB or less is a gain-staging problem, not a hardware problem.
Three ways to close 2 dB without buying anything:
- Track at −20 dBFS instead of −18. The target level enters the formula directly, so this removes exactly 2 dB of demand and the chain fits with nothing to spare.
- Work the microphone 2 dB closer. Between 85 and 94 dB SPL — the difference between a comfortable distance and a broadcast distance — the requirement falls from 60 dB to 51 dB, and the interface suddenly has 7 dB in hand.
- Accept the last 2 dB in the preamp's own noise. The iD4 MkII publishes −129 dBu EIN, so running it flat out is not the disaster the forum makes of it: the noise floor moves, but by less than the gain does.
The pearl. «Not enough gain» and «2 dB short» are different diagnoses with different prices, and only the second one is a number. The same interface that is 2 dB short of an SM7B at conversational distance has 7 dB of room at podcast distance — the fix that costs nothing is the one nobody sells.
