Warm Audio WA12 MKII with a Sennheiser MK 4 into an AudioBox GO: 71 dB of gain and 31 dB of use for it
A 449-dollar preamp in front of a 79-dollar interface is not absurd, but the gain knob is the wrong reason for it. The MK 4 asks 31 dB; run the WA12 anywhere near its 71 dB and the AudioBox GO's +10 dBu input disappears 22 dB below the signal.

Short answer: the chain works and sounds like the WA12, but you will use 31 of its 71 decibels, and the other 40 are a trap on this interface.
The numbers. At 85 dB SPL the MK 4's 25 mV/Pa — −32 dBV/Pa — puts −38.8 dBu on the cable. The AudioBox GO clips at +10 dBu, so a −18 dBFS take needs 31 dB in total. Set the WA12 to 31 dB and its output sits at −7.8 dBu, comfortably inside the interface. Set it to 40 dB and you are at +1.2 dBu, still fine. Run it at its full 71 dB and the output would be +32.2 dBu — 22 dB past the point where the AudioBox GO's input gives up. The 71 dB figure is real; it is simply not for this microphone at this distance.
Where the outboard preamp earns its place. Not on the gain knob. The WA12 MKII is a discrete API-style circuit with a CineMag output transformer, and what you are buying is the colour of that path plus a front-panel Hi-Z input running through a JFET, which makes it a usable DI as well. Against a 79-dollar interface, the audible difference at a comfortable 31 dB of gain is the transformer, not the headroom.
A phantom detail that matters here. Sennheiser specifies the MK 4 as Phantom powering 48 V ±4 V (P48, IEC 61938) — a narrow window of 44 to 52 V, and unlike the Audio-Technica AT2035 there is no tolerance down to 11 V. The WA12 supplies its own 48 V from a mains-powered chassis, which is precisely why this chain is safe: the microphone is not depending on a bus-powered interface's phantom rail. If you removed the WA12 and plugged the MK 4 straight into the AudioBox GO, it would need only 31 dB there too — but it would be living on USB-derived phantom, and the MK 4 is the wrong microphone to gamble that with.
The gem. Sennheiser also prints Min. terminating impedance 1 kΩ beside Nominal impedance approx. 50 Ω — a 20:1 ratio, far more generous than the 10:1 bridging rule of thumb, and a reminder that the MK 4's real constraints are electrical environment and supply voltage, never gain. A microphone with 25 mV/Pa of output has never needed a big preamp; it has needed a clean one.
What to do: MK 4 → XLR → WA12 MKII (48 V on the WA12) → 1/4" TRS → AudioBox GO, interface preamp at minimum, WA12 around 31 dB. Treat the top half of that gain knob as reserve for ribbons and distant sources, not as a target.
