Aston Origin on an Audient EVO 4 and an iPad mini: a higher clip point costs you gain, it does not save it
The same Aston Origin needs 30 dB on a Volt 176 and 37 dB on an EVO 4. The seven-decibel difference is not the microphone and not the preamp — it is where each converter clips, a number most buyers never look at.

Short answer: 37 dB of the EVO 4's 58, and the reason it is 37 rather than 30 has nothing to do with the microphone.
The numbers. Aston publishes the Origin's sensitivity as 23.7 mV/Pa, which converts to −32.5 dBV/Pa. At 85 dB SPL that puts −39.3 dBu on the cable. The EVO 4 clips at +16 dBu, so a −18 dBFS take sits at −2 dBu and the preamp must supply 37 dB of its 58 dB. The interface draws 2.5 W of the iPad mini's 7.5 W port.
The same microphone on four interfaces. Volt 176, which clips at +9 dBu: 30 dB. AudioBox GO at +10 dBu: 31 dB. iD4 MkII at +12 dBu: 33 dB. EVO 4 at +16 dBu: 37 dB. The microphone did not change and neither did the room. Every decibel of extra clip headroom is a decibel the preamp must add to reach the same digital level. This is why a “more gain” number on a spec sheet cannot be compared between interfaces without the maximum input level beside it — 58 dB on a +16 dBu converter and 55 dB on a +9 dBu converter leave almost the same useful reserve.
And this is not an argument against headroom. The EVO 4's +16 dBu ceiling is the reason it survives a shouted vocal or a snare without a pad. You pay for that with preamp gain, and 58 dB is enough to pay it.
The gem. Aston publishes sensitivity, self-noise, maximum SPL, pattern and phantom requirement — and no output impedance at all. That single omission means no honest claim can be made about how the Origin behaves into an unusual load: a transformer input, a load-switching booster, a long cable run into a low-impedance preamp. Sennheiser and sE Electronics print a minimum load; Aston prints neither the load nor the source. When you see a forum post asserting the Origin “likes” some particular preamp impedance, that assertion has no published number underneath it.
What to do: one XLR cable, +48 V on, gain around 37 dB. Aston specifies 48 V, not a range, so if the iPad mini is your only power source keep an eye on it — the EVO 4 has room here, but a phantom-hungry condenser on a bus-powered card is the classic place for a session to fail quietly.
