Rode NTK on an RME Babyface Pro FS: a condenser that needs no phantom power — and why the button should stay off
Our catalogue records the NTK as "phantom power required: false", which is true and misleading in the same breath. It is a valve microphone with its own mains supply, connected by a 7-pin cable, and the +48 V switch has nothing to do with it.

Short answer: leave +48 V off, and the level is the easiest thing on this page — 35 dB out of the Babyface's 65.
The NTK is a large-diaphragm valve condenser. Its capsule and its 6922 twin-triode are fed by a dedicated mains power supply that ships in the box and connects to the microphone with a 7-pin XLR cable. That cable is not the one that goes to your interface — the PSU has a standard 3-pin XLR output, and that is what reaches the Babyface. Phantom power is not part of the design anywhere.
This is why the flag in our catalogue reads phantomPowerRequired: false and why that flag, on its own, is a poor guide. In the field it means two opposite things:
- a dynamic microphone that wants nothing, and
- a valve microphone that wants a great deal, just not from you.
The schema cannot tell them apart, and neither can a green tick.
The level, which is undramatic on purpose. At 85 dB SPL the NTK's −38 dBV/Pa sensitivity puts about −44.8 dBu on the cable. Against the Babyface Pro FS's +8 dBu clip point and a −18 dBFS target, the chain needs 35 dB out of the 65 the RME provides. That is the lower-middle of the range, where a preamp is at its quietest and most linear. A valve microphone into a high-headroom converter is a chain with room to breathe at both ends.
The gem, and it comes from Rode's own support desk. People ask whether phantom power will destroy the power supply. Rode's answer is that these supplies do not require phantom power but are built to cope with being fed it, and that no damage will result — while still advising that you switch it off where possible. That is an unusually candid piece of documentation: the manufacturer is saying the accident is survivable and is telling you not to make a habit of it anyway. Treat it as the rule for every microphone with its own PSU: not a catastrophe, not something to leave switched on.
Practical. Two cables, two connectors, one direction of travel: microphone → 7-pin cable → PSU → 3-pin XLR → interface. Power the PSU up before you speak into it and give the valve a couple of minutes; a tube microphone's tone at switch-on is not the tone it settles at. And when you are done, +48 V stays where it was — off.
