At 5 m the receiver's 80 W into the 94.5 dB Klipsch give 99.6 dB continuous at the seat: 5.4 dB below the 105 dB reference peak. Ordinary listening at 85 dB average asks for 2.8 W, so the receiver spends most of its evening barely awake.

Reference at 5 m needs 281 W per channel. No five-channel receiver in this price class has that, and the arithmetic gets worse than the single number suggests: receiver power figures are quoted with two channels driven, not five, while every channel draws from the same power supply. The rating on the box and the load in a film scene are not the same test.

What to do. Move 2.5 m closer and the same receiver gives 105.6 dB, because halving the distance is +6 dB and costs nothing. Or run at roughly −5 dB relative to reference, which is what most people do anyway and what the volume dial's numbering assumes. Adding a subwoofer helps more than a bigger receiver: it takes the bass off a bookshelf woofer, and bass is where the watts go.
